Facelıft operatıon and facıal aesthetıcs

With time, facial sagging, wrinkles, and deformation are inevitable. There are surgical and non-surgical solutions in this area of interest to plastic surgery. Filler injection for small wrinkles is an example of non-surgical methods. However, the most effective results (in line with the right patient selection) are generally achieved by facelift operations.

Sunlight, stress, environmental factors, smoking and alcohol use throughout life may result in wrinkles, droopy eyebrows, an excess on eyelids, and under-eye bags on a human face. However, deep wrinkles around the lips, a band appearance along the anterior segment of the neck, sagging in the double chin region, deflation and downward sagging of the cheeks, excess skin related wrinkles and folds in the front of the ear, deep lines on the forehead inevitably come along with aging. In cases, where there is a genetic predisposition, this can be seen much earlier than expected.

It can be possible to eliminate the effects of these signs of aging on our faces through appropriately planned operations performed by experienced hands. People above the middle age, who have started to experience sagging of the facial and neck skin and deepening in the grooves on the lip-cheek border are ideal for this operation. In facelift operations, implementation of eyelid aesthetics, eyebrow lift, filler injection to wrinkles, if necessary, contribute to the improvement in the facial appearance.

HOW IS FACELIFT SURGERY PERFORMED?

Facelift is one of the most complicated operations of plastic surgery and lasts 5-7 hours on average. General anaesthesia is preferred for both the patient and the doctor convenience during the operation. The target of the operation is to restore the youthful appearance of the face by removing tissue sagging and skin excess formed due to aging. After the operation, hospital stay for at least 1 night is required.

AFTER FACELIFT SURGERY

Dressings with packs for a few days following the operation are usually done with only special skin plasters (for minimizing oedema). Although interventions in the eyelid area require longer periods, all bruises disappear after 2 weeks on average. After the 3rd day, the person can easily resume his/her daily activities, while a rest period of 10-14 days is required before getting back to the active work environment.

DOES A SCAR REMAIN after THE OPERATION?

As it is the case with every operation, a scar definitely remains in the facelift operation as well but these scars are coincided with the natural creases of the body. They are not much visible as they are left behind the ears and in the scalp.

HOW LONG DOES THE RESULT LAST?

It is not possible to give a clear answer to this question as the face is a dynamic region and skin-tissue quality varies from person to person. Nevertheless, the results of the surgeries last decades with well-planned, pinpoint interventions following proper detection of spots based on the patient’s needs.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF THE OPERATION?

The most frightening complication of facelift operations is the temporary or permanent damage to the nerve, which we call the facial nerve, which enables the movement of facial muscles. However, this risk is very low due to the improvement of operation techniques. Nevertheless, usual post-operation complications such as blood accumulation under the skin (hematoma), infection, asymmetry, and bad scars can be seen.
